One research says that knee pain in winters can happen because more blood is sent towards the organs like the heart and lungs. Due to this, the blood vessels in the arms, legs, knees get constricted. It will cause less blood flow and lead to knee pain. 

Ayurveda suggests that winters are dry, cold, and freezing. Due to this, it may cause knee joint pain, especially in a Vata person. However, it can happen to any other person too. If a person with another body type has an imbalanced Vata due to diet and lifestyle, it can cause pain in their knee joints also.

1. Dashanga lepa (Herbal paste):

It is a combination of ten herbal components. Dashanga lepa is a highly effective remedy for knee joint pain. 

In winters, you can apply it once or twice a day. It has remarkable effects even if you have joint inflammation with the pain. 

How to use it?

  • Take 5 gm dashanga powder in a small bowl.
  • Add 10 ml warm sesame oil.
  • Mix it well and make a paste.
  • Apply it over the affected area.
  • Keep it for 10 to 15 minutes. 
  • Remove it with warm water.  
  • Dry your affected knee.
  • Wear a warm trouser.

2. Turmeric, Ginger, Cinnamon milk

Turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon have potent anti-inflammatory effects. It may help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. 

As per Ayurveda, it will balance the Vata. As a result, it will cure the pain, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints. 

How to use it?

Ingredients:

Method:

  • Put one cup of milk in a pan.
  • Add a ½ inch of turmeric root, cinnamon stick, and ginger.
  • Bring it to a boil.
  • Strain it in a cup.
  • Drink it hot once or twice a day.

3. Knee massage

Massaging your knees helps to improve blood circulation. It also strengthens the joints and balances the aggravated Vata. It will also help you if there is stiffness along with pain in your knees. 

Maha Narayana taila or Dhanwantharam taila is the best Ayurvedic oil for knee massage. 

How to use it?

  • Warm the Mahanarayana/ Dhanwantharam oil.
  • Apply it over the affected knee. 
  • Give a gentle massage in a circular motion.
  • Do it for 10 to 15 minutes. 
  • Leave it for half an hour (before bath).
  • Wash it off with warm water.
  • Wear warm clothes.

4. Diet:

As per Ayurveda, you should eat a Vata pacifying meal. It will help you prevent and reduce the pain. 

Vata pacifying food here means eating warm food items. Choose food that will improve your blood circulation and strengthen your joints.

  • Eat food items made of wheat.
  • Take more warm vegetable soup. 
  • Include ghee in each meal.
  • Add half a teaspoon of roasted sesame to your meals once or twice a day.
  • Consume black gram, horse gram, eggplant, garlic, pomegranate, raisins, milk, etc.

  • Wear warm clothes
  • Sit in sunlight for a minimum of half an hour with bare knee joints. 
  • Practice yoga asanas like Utthita trikonasana (extended triangle pose), Uttanasana (standing forward bend), and Makarasana (crocodile pose).

Avoid the below-mentioned:

  • Stress
  • Anger
  • Exertion
  • Do not wake till at night.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting.
